2020, the year of clarity

By now you have had your fill of the “2020 year in review,” but here’s another perspective you maybe haven’t heard. Have you noticed that the year 2020 could be written as "20/20", as in perfect vision? As challenging as 2020 was socially, physically, and psychologically, there was definitely clarity.

Life slowed down to an almost full stop in March and April. All social engagement were cancelled, work from home ensued and restaurants and gyms were closed.

I don’t think I’ve gone so long cooking at home every day. It was six months before I ate at a restaurant! Even then, it was outside on the patio.

I won’t rehash all of the other changes to daily life since everyone reading this has likely experienced the very same things.

Clarity. Ah yes, clarity. I don’t have to go to a gym to get a good workout. If it’s too hot outside to run, then I run in the early morning before the heat of the day. If it’s too cold outside, then I bundle up with my Smartwool socks, thermal leggings and neck gaiter, hat, gloves, and jacket. If it’s icy, then I strap on the YakTrak.

There are ways around the weather. For strength training, a few dumbbells, resistance bands, and a step box/platform will offer enough versatility to get the job done.

Body weight workouts still build muscle too. More importantly, I’ve learned that I need to listen to my body. If I’m tired, I don’t need to push it. Maybe I need to sit down for a while or take a short nap.

Here’s a thought… we don’t need to always be rushing off somewhere or be busy with a project. It’s okay to take a few minutes to breathe, just sit and be present. Not every minute of every day needs to be filled up with being busy. There are always to-do lists.

If you don’t take some time to evaluate where you want to go in life or what is important, the to-do list takes over your life!

So, in the spirit of starting a new year, I encourage you to examine your life. Take a deep breath, exhale and do it again, and again, and again.

Now that you are relaxed, think about what is important to you. Make that the priority and dedicate time to it. Everything else may be ranked in importance with proportional attention given to those items. Eventually, it will all fall into place and your life will look amazingly different.
